The Stellated star Pendant Lamp
Islamic Geometry

The Surah-an-Nur 24:35 (The Light) from the Quran describes the light divine through the idea of ‘light upon light’. In particular, we wanted to investigate the aspects of chiaroscuro and sfumato as the light travels through the complexity of folds of a transluscent surface (this lamp is made from parchment leather). Inspired by the geomtric complexity of mosque ceilings in the Islamic world, a series of 3D tessellation operations transform a regular dodecahedron into an object containing twelve 10 pointed 'Najm' (or stars), that shine with their own light and illumine the heavens and the earth, as also our hearts and minds. Allah the truly formless presents Himself to us in various forms, of His own choosing.
